Learning to Live with Hope: The Reset Challenge
So the title of this blog post suggests that I’m doing something a little different. Amy is still, and will always be, my inspiration for living life differently. I just made a decision to challenge myself by making small changes that may result in big results.
At the beginning of the year I made the usual New Years resolution, just like everyone else. And guess what? I failed within the week. Big surprise there, or not. I did keep the ideas fresh in my mind and continued to tell myself I would pursue them. Today I did it.
First I made a HUGE commitment to have a “No Spend” month. The author Ruth Soukup wrote several books on budgeting. I have owned one “Living Well, Spending Less” for years. The pages have barely been turned! Since I had yet another month of poor budget choices I decided ENOUGH ALREADY! So I’m doing it. Freeze on the frivolous spending. Only necessities. I’m hopeful this will put us in a position to payoff all debt and get back to a saving lifestyle versus a spending one.
Change two is saying NO to social media. I have found myself wasting whole evenings or even days on Facebook. What a waste! I find a few things entertaining (such as Dr. Pimple Popper videos) but I also find so many temptations I don’t need. Temptations to buy “stuff”. Temptations to compare my ‘friends’ perfect lives to my own. So I said goodbye. I moved it off of my main screen of my phone so those bright red notification bubbles won’t capture my attention and BOOM temptation gone. Am I ready to completely nix my account? Not quite. I’ll work on it. Honestly I admire my friends that dont have it. Someday I’ll set aside my addiction...
So what did today bring? Wowza, where do I start. First of all I found myself catching up and really engaging myself at work. Without the temptations to shop online or play on Facebook I focused! Weird! It was a great feeling to be dedicated to my work again. I also used my built in breaks to read my devotional, budget book, and mom inspiration book. Next I was super productive at home. I got a super tasty supper made while helping my kids build a box fort, had a family dinner, cleaned up supper, scrubbed my kitchen (while listening to my audiobook), exercised, had a text conversation with my uncle, vacuumed my whole upstairs, did 3 loads of laundry, and played two games of Bananagrams with my kids. Now I’m writing all of this out so I can remember the benefits before showering (which I desperately need), cuddling my kids to sleep, reading my book, and sleeping soundly,
Okay, so I’m slowly realizing how exhausted today has made me. I’m signing off. Cheers to tomorrow being another great day.
